Erddig National Trust! 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

As artist in residence I will be producing a carving for the National Trust that will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity!

The dates I will be carving this piece are on the 11th and 12th of July, so come and watch!

I’m also carving some smaller pieces on the 4th and 5th so anyone is welcome to come and see me in action!

Here’s a couple of pieces I’ve created so far, inspired by the wonderful property and it’s history…

Spring Update

Spring Update 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

Tortoise CarvingIt’s been a while since I’ve posted here, but lots of things have been happening. More speed carves. More regular carvings – small, medium, and large. Custom pieces galore!

There was a giraffe, a tortoise (see photo, opposite), a sculpture of some hands. There was a dining table set made out of old church pews and a play area put together from felled trees (much cheaper than spending lots on custom equipment).

I even managed a day off for my birthday earlier this month!

Keep up with everything day to day over on my Facebook Page.

Out of Commission

Out of Commission 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

pet-portraitI recently completed my third charity carve for Clatterbridge Cancer Care – a cat bench, complete with paw prints.

Now I’m off recovering from a minor hernia operation. I will be out of commission for a few weeks in which I’m not allowed to carve anything but, speaking of commissions, I will have plenty of time to get back into sketching. If you’re interested in a pet portrait (like the one of my own dog, Poppy – pictured) then get in touch!

And in the meantime, Happy New Year!

An Alien, a Dragon, and some Fairies

The alien sculpture I said I was working on in my last blog post has now been oiled and installed. I hope to get a timelapse video of the carve up at some soon, but for now there’s a short video of it in place on Facebook, if you want to have a look.

In November, Dan completed an oak kitchen made from 1850’s church pews. Now two other pews have been restored and are for sale.

Meanwhile, the Wrexham Street Festival went off without a hitch. Thanks to ‘Ginger Cat’ on Twitter for the photo of Hemlock the dragon on display.

Japan Update

Japan Update 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

wolf carvingLike I was saying in my last post, I’m in Japan at the moment and having a blast.

The whole event is called the 2nd Takacho Carving Collection and was kicked off by the Japanese carvers having a two-day competition. I helped at that and did a little teaching session on carving the human face. Now I’m busy sculpting a set of wolves, myself, and enjoying collaborating with a lot of talented others.

On an entirely different note, though: for my second Clatterbridge Corporate Challenge auction piece, I’m taking bids in advance so that the winner can decide the design. More info here.

Live Carving Demos at Events

Live Carving Demos at Events 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

carvings-for-collectionThe other day, I set out three small-ish carvings, ready for collection (pictured left). One of them – the bear in the background – I did as a twenty-minute quick-carve as part of the fundraising event we had for Macmillan.

Between the coffee morning and the silent auction, we raised £335, and that’s not including gift aid!

Speaking of speed-carving for charity, though, I did another twenty-minute piece for a networking event recently, too (see here).

I’m bringing a sculpture of a hawk, similar to the one pictured, with me to Llangollen Food Festival this weekend. And I’ll be live carving Wrexham Street Festival on October 29th, as well.

I hope to see you soon!

Chicks, Charity, and Children Today

Chicks, Charity, and Children Today 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

chick-carvingRecently, I had the pleasure of doing some really detailed work on a sculpture of three chicks, and I think it turned out rather well – see photo (left)!

I’ve also been down at the Moneypenny launch, having a look over the treehouse I installed in the centre of their office. Now, that was an unusual commission indeed!

On top of that, two days ago I was at the “Meet the Superheros” fun day in Chester, which reminds me: a range of my superhero-themed wallhangings are still available for sale, with 10% going to Children Today.

More soon!

Pretty as a Painted Fish

Pretty as a Painted Fish 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

Here at Blokus Wood Carving Festival, Harry Thomas and I have put the finishing touches to a giant anglerfish sculpture. It may not be the prettiest fish in the pond, but it certainly meets the theme of world’s wildest animals. This particular piece got a couple of special additions: white painted teeth and a glow-in-the-dark head light (which, of course, you can’t see due to the copious amounts of sunlight in the photo – it’s a hard life, I know). Tell me what you think. Is she something you could see in your garden?
