Erddig National Trust!

Erddig National Trust! 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

As artist in residence I will be producing a carving for the National Trust that will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity!

The dates I will be carving this piece are on the 11th and 12th of July, so come and watch!

I’m also carving some smaller pieces on the 4th and 5th so anyone is welcome to come and see me in action!

Here’s a couple of pieces I’ve created so far, inspired by the wonderful property and it’s history…

Spring Update

Spring Update 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

Tortoise CarvingIt’s been a while since I’ve posted here, but lots of things have been happening. More speed carves. More regular carvings – small, medium, and large. Custom pieces galore!

There was a giraffe, a tortoise (see photo, opposite), a sculpture of some hands. There was a dining table set made out of old church pews and a play area put together from felled trees (much cheaper than spending lots on custom equipment).

I even managed a day off for my birthday earlier this month!

Keep up with everything day to day over on my Facebook Page.

Happy 2017!

I’ve just started easing back into work. My first piece of this year has been a family of owls, pictured below.

This month’s Clatterbridge charity carve didn’t receive any bids, but if you want to be in with a chance of having a carving made custom for you next month, keep an eye on my Facebook page for details of when the next round of bidding opens.

Out of Commission

Out of Commission 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

pet-portraitI recently completed my third charity carve for Clatterbridge Cancer Care – a cat bench, complete with paw prints.

Now I’m off recovering from a minor hernia operation. I will be out of commission for a few weeks in which I’m not allowed to carve anything but, speaking of commissions, I will have plenty of time to get back into sketching. If you’re interested in a pet portrait (like the one of my own dog, Poppy – pictured) then get in touch!

And in the meantime, Happy New Year!

An Alien, a Dragon, and some Fairies

The alien sculpture I said I was working on in my last blog post has now been oiled and installed. I hope to get a timelapse video of the carve up at some soon, but for now there’s a short video of it in place on Facebook, if you want to have a look.

In November, Dan completed an oak kitchen made from 1850’s church pews. Now two other pews have been restored and are for sale.

Meanwhile, the Wrexham Street Festival went off without a hitch. Thanks to ‘Ginger Cat’ on Twitter for the photo of Hemlock the dragon on display.

November Catch Up

November Catch Up 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

little girl carvingThis month has gone in such a flash! Let me see if I can summarize it all… there were more speed carvings completed in Japan  – such as the little girl sculpture, pictured. Back in the UK, there was a bear for the second Clatterbridge charity carving. More recently in the month, I made an angel in oak based on the ‘Pool of Bethesda’ painting, and a Gryphon for the Alice in Wonderland trail at Erddig National Trust in Wrexham, plus I’ve started work on an unusual alien commission.

December, of course, is a mega-busy month for most people and we here at Tree Craving central are no exception. Simon’s diary is all booked up until the end of January, with highlights including school Christmas fairs, and the Wrexham Street Festival on December 3rd.

The Clatterbridge Corporate Challenge

The Clatterbridge Corporate Challenge 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

doormouse-sculptureLast Friday (October 21st), I completed the first in a series of six carvings I’m doing over the next six months, being broadcast live over Facebook for Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. Video one is up on my official page (in two parts) here and here, and the auction for the resulting carving – a sweet little dormouse sculpture (pictured left) – is NOW OPEN!

Please send silent bids via private message to my Facebook Page.

Competition closes at 8pm Sunday.

Good luck!

Chicks, Charity, and Children Today

Chicks, Charity, and Children Today 150 150 Simon O'Rourke

chick-carvingRecently, I had the pleasure of doing some really detailed work on a sculpture of three chicks, and I think it turned out rather well – see photo (left)!

I’ve also been down at the Moneypenny launch, having a look over the treehouse I installed in the centre of their office. Now, that was an unusual commission indeed!

On top of that, two days ago I was at the “Meet the Superheros” fun day in Chester, which reminds me: a range of my superhero-themed wallhangings are still available for sale, with 10% going to Children Today.

More soon!

Carved-Logo-

Having finally finished my to-scale shire horse sculpture project (pictured below), I’ve now started work on a carving of a norman soldier.

Recently, I also got a brand new laser engraver, so if you need a sign for your house or shop, let me know! I’m really happy with the one I made for myself (pictured above).
